2. Pick one real business problem

Don't begin with “I want to build an AI app.”

Start with a problem such as:

What does this business repeatedly waste time or money doing?

Emergent specifically wants working software solving a genuine business problem rather than a concept or pitch deck.

3. Build your app with Emergent

Explain the business, its user and the workflow clearly.

Instead of:

Build an inventory app.

Try:

Build an inventory app for a three-location bakery. Managers should see ingredients running low, compare stock between locations and record transfers between stores.

A specific brief gives the builder much more useful context.

4. Deploy and test it

Get the main workflow working before spending too much time polishing colors and animations.

Better still, have someone who actually experiences the problem test your app.

5. Submit your app separately

This is easy to miss:

Deploying your app does not automatically enter it into Builder Fest.

You must complete the separate submission step from your Emergent Homepage or Profile.

Emergent says your entry is successfully submitted when you have both:

1. a Submitted status; and
2. a confirmation email.

The submission deadline is September 20, 2026 at 23:59 GMT.

6. Collect legitimate upvotes

After submitting, share your public entry page.

This matters because only the 200 most-upvoted projects advance to judging. There is no fixed number of votes that guarantees qualification.

Emergent allows you to ask customers, coworkers and your network to vote, but prohibits bought votes, bots, fake accounts, incentivized voting and coordinated vote swapping.

The strongest idea isn't necessarily the cleverest—it is the one where you can demonstrate a real before-and-after business result.

How winners are chosen

Upvotes only get you through the first stage.

The 200 most-upvoted submissions are scored using this rubric:

The biggest individual factor is business impact.

That means evidence could matter more than adding another flashy feature.

Instead of saying:

This app could save businesses significant time.

Try to prove:

Three employees tested the app for a week and reduced the process from 45 minutes to 12 minutes.

Emergent itself suggests evidence such as time saved, fewer missed follow-ups, cost or revenue changes, user adoption and before-and-after results.

How much can you win

All 100 winning positions also receive an Emergent Standard plan reward, with the duration depending on placement.

Who can participate

You don't need to be a developer, and teams are allowed.

The main worldwide competition is currently open to eligible adults except residents of Indonesia, France (including its specified overseas territories) and Türkiye, where Emergent says separate competitions are being run.

If entering as a team, one member needs to act as the primary contact.

Is Builder Fest worth entering

The $50,000 first prize is attractive, but there's obviously no guarantee you'll win. You first need enough legitimate votes to make the top 200 and then score well against the judging rubric.

That's why I wouldn't build a disposable app purely for the competition.

A better approach is to solve a problem that is already costing you or someone you know time or money.

If you don't win: you may still end up with software that fixes an actual workflow.
